I've been attempting to install Linux on this old iMac G5, but I'm unsure about the steps. The online guides I've checked haven't worked for me. I'm hoping to get Ubuntu running so the system becomes functional.

Get an older Ubuntu release for advertising use, burn the disc, insert it, restart and press the C key, Ubuntu should appear in the boot options, press Enter, then install normally.

Are you planning to run contemporary applications on it or mainly for web activities? If a Linux OS doesn’t perform well, consider the modern software designed for Mac OS X. The G5 remains quite sluggish, but TenFourFox should function adequately.

It depends on the model you're referring to. The 1.8 GHz 17" and 2 GHz 17" are likely different iMacs, while the 2 GHz 20" is a distinct model. Could you clarify which one you mean?

I've only heard about those three, and that's what popped into my mind. Just kept checking, and it seems they're the ALS models... not too smart for me.

There were a minimum of eight widely used models during that period.

I’m aiming for straightforward online work but also want to experiment with Linux as a hobby project. I have a G5 for $30, and I’m considering boosting the RAM to 2GB (it’s only $15) and adding an SSD. The main challenge is finding a working download link for Linux—every site I check seems inactive. I’ll try the browser anyway.

No, I'm not looking for PowerPC Linux versions via the G5.
