Hi, I have a Windows 8 laptop coming my way from a client. It’s showing the error C0000034 when trying to apply an update. The customer told me she used the mouse to wake it up and noticed this message on the screen—it looks like the Windows update didn’t go through properly. The laptop is running Windows 8.0, but it needs to be on Windows 8 because of an accounting package that doesn’t work on 8.1 or Windows 10. I’m trying to fix it instead of rebuilding the OS. I’ve called to ask for a startup repair, but that didn’t help. I also ran through the command prompt using Notepad to edit a missing .XML file, but it wasn’t found in the WinSxS folder. I tried booting into safe mode, which still showed the same error. There are no system restore points available. I’m doing my best research ahead of time so I can actually try to resolve this before the laptop arrives. I really want to fix it rather than reinstall from scratch. Thanks, Shaun.

The update cache might be damaged. Review step 6 for details: https://windowsreport.com/fatal-error-c0...operation/

It would be smart to rename the Windows update folder.

It seems the name is already in place and changing it isn't possible. You might turn off the Windows update services and then proceed with that action to generate a fresh update directory.
