Help me understand RAM in 2025
It's been nearly a decade since my last PC upgrade. I've finally installed a 9800x3D and am planning to pair it with a B850 iX motherboard. I'm seeking advice on RAM—what frequency and amount should I choose? Should I look for the best value? Besides gaming games like Cyberpunk and Red Dead Redemption 2, I also handle photo and video editing. What else should I consider?
You don’t always require high-end specs, though 6000 CL30 usually offers good value because it’s the quickest option that works with Ryzen 7000/9000 chips. CL30 settings are budget-friendly and won’t break the bank (CL32 is similar and sometimes cheaper). When it comes to storage, it really depends on your needs. For casual gaming, 32GB should suffice. For editing photos or videos, you might need more—48GB or even 64GB could be better for complex projects. Choose the lowest price you can get in that speed and capacity range; otherwise, the main difference between brands is usually the heat spreader. Some enthusiasts focus on QVL because it lists verified kits for a specific board, but don’t stress too much—most kits work even if not listed, and there aren’t as many memory makers as you might think. Most people end up using the same types of RAM across different brands.
Simple choice: DDR5-6000CL30 available in 2x16GB or 2x24GB configurations (or possibly 2x32GB or 2x48GB if you need even more). Avoid purchasing 6200 or 6400 unless your motherboard explicitly supports them, otherwise expect trouble.
32GB appears to be a recent comfortable standard for consumers over the past couple of years. You likely won't require more unless you're managing servers or heavy productivity tasks. Ryzen offers solid speed, dependability, and value at DDR5-6000. Aim for minimal CAS latency—generally CL30 is the lowest available, though CL28 has recently launched with limited supply, such as regional restrictions.
