I purchased my PC around a year or two ago with Windows 8.1 already installed. The installation included no disk or activation details, and I lost track of the product key needed to turn it on. Can you find a way to retrieve that key directly from the computer itself? Thank you in advance.
No changes made. The PC does not appear to have been updated, and no Windows activation sticker was found.
I own the HDD, not a custom-built PC. The company that sold it has shut down, so I can't reach them anymore.
From Windows 8 onward, you won’t find a COA sticker with a serial number anymore. Keys from OEM manufacturers are now stored in the BIOS. Obtaining the product key is straightforward as long as you have access to the Windows installation. Tools like this can help you locate your key for recording. To retrieve your install media, you only need the product key you extracted during installation and enter it into M$ software here.
The product key is stored directly in the BIOS of the motherboard. There’s no physical label anymore. When you move to the latest free version of Windows 8.1, activation happens automatically using the built-in key. This should simplify the setup process. Another Microsoft representative explains that instead of requiring users to enter a sticker during installation, the system now retrieves the key automatically from the BIOS. This change removes the need for manual entry and reduces the risk of losing or misplacing the key. If you need to reinstall Windows 8.1 on a machine with Windows 8.1, the setup will pull the product key directly from the motherboard without any user input. As a result, traditional sticker labels will disappear from these systems.
If you're having trouble making your USB bootable for installation, let me know.
