I own an old Weller WTCP unit from 1970 equipped with the magnastat heating system. It keeps getting hot, even in low light, and sometimes the tips seem to overheat. I replaced the tip and it didn’t make a difference. The switch is open when the device is off and closes when it’s running, so it doesn’t appear to be stuck. One thought I had was that the ground prong on the power cable might be damaged and could be contributing to the heating. If anyone has insights, please share.

Consider identifying the precise model first, then locate a service manual to assist with troubleshooting. Here are some useful references:
- Technical notes for WTCPT: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/114181...tml#manual
- Notes on WTCPS: https://elektrotanya.com/weller_wtcp_s.p...nload.html
- Information about W-TCP and W-TCP-L: https://bama.edebris.com/download/weller..._OI_PL.pdf

Hello @GamerGuyEbby! Not having proper grounding with AC poses a significant safety risk, so I’d strongly advise against using the system without correct grounding. This issue seems more related to how the iron is built rather than just overheating. I suspect the design might lack sufficient regulation or resistors to manage current flow. If you’re handy with soldering, you could fix it by adding components that control current. However, I can’t suggest that unless you’re very precise. The safest bet is to get a new iron that regulates current and stays cool. Thanks for reaching out—I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more! Cheers! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*

This really made a big difference. The manuals were hard to understand, but they provided useful guidance that will assist with future repairs. I checked the continuity across the switch when power was off and confirmed there was a connection, which suggests my probes weren’t placed correctly and the switch is stuck. Consequently, I ordered a new assembly for it.
