I just assembled my initial PC with an i7 8700k and an nzxt kraken x62 AIO (using the recommended thermal paste). I haven’t overclocked the CPU because of the high temperatures, but I want to. When running Assassin’s Creed Origins at 1080p ultra v sync, my temperatures reach the high 70s to low 80s, and the CAM software warns me it’s too high, saying it could harm the CPU. Is this typical for the 8700k with this configuration?

Probably, but you'll need to delid and use water cooling. 4,3 works well with 6 cores. Your voltage in games should be checked—don’t turn MCE back on, or it’ll send the CPU way too much power. I usually don’t like AIO coolers, though those temps seem okay for the stock 8700k. If you do, it might be tough to keep the CPU under 70°C. I’ve played Assassin’s Creed but haven’t played it myself, so I can’t share my real experience with temperatures.

what mobo do you have? if it's an asus with bios and disabled multicore enhancement, it basically auto overclocks but uses a lot of voltage for the clocks it targets, causing excessive heat. when this setting is active, your cpu runs at its intel stock speeds—around 4-3 ghz across all six cores. that configuration should be disabled by default since it leads to high temperatures and users often suspect the cpu isn't functioning correctly.

zfast4y0u :
i have an asus mobo. if i set bios to go in bios and disable multicore enhancement, it basically auto overclocks but uses way too much voltage for the clocks it targets, causing high temperatures. with that setting on, your cpu runs at its intel stock speeds—around 4.3 ghz on 6 cores. that setting should be off by default since it leads to excessive heat and users often think their cpu isn’t working properly. i tested with your solution in assassins creed and got temps around 62-70 degrees, max. if you want to boost it to 5ghz manually, is that possible?

Probably, but you'll need to delid and use water cooling. 4,3 works well with 6 cores. Your voltage in games should be fine, just don't turn MCE back on—it pushes the CPU way too high. I usually prefer AIO coolers, though those temps seem okay for the stock 8700k. If you go that route, it might be tough to keep the CPU under 70°C. I've played Assassin's Creed but haven't played it myself, so I can't share my experience with temperatures.

It seems you're likely going to need to delid and use water cooling. The 4,3 configuration works well with 6 cores. Your voltage preference in games is probably around 12V, but don't turn MCE on again—it'll send the CPU way too much power. I usually prefer not to use AIO coolers; those temperatures look okay for a stock 8700K. If you're okay with it, you might struggle to keep the CPU under 70°C. I've played Assassin's Creed but haven't played it myself, so I can't share my own experience with temperatures. I have an 8700K OC to 4.8GHz with 1.23V on the AIDA stress test—CPU hits 65°C, max is 70, but most of the time it's between 60-65. Thanks for your patience, and good luck!
