The i9-9900k delivers outstanding gaming performance and serves its purpose well in other tasks. Since it lacks a built-in cooler, you'll need to purchase one separately. The 3900x model comes with a stock CPU cooler that should suffice for everyday use or moderate overclocking. What are your plans for the build? Which components are you using—RAM, motherboard, and GPU?
They vary quite a bit. With four cores, eight threads, and a stock cooler, very few would seriously suggest choosing the 9900k instead of the 3900X unless you're into gaming or need Intel-based performance.
I haven’t picked a motherboard yet since I haven’t selected the CPU. I’ll only play games on it.
I’d recommend going for a 9700K or a 3700X and investing elsewhere. If you’re not too picky, the 9900K is my top choice. A 3700X paired with a B450 board and 3600MHz DDR4 would suit me best—especially if it lets you upgrade to a better monitor or VR headset. I expect you’ll have an RTX 2080 if you spend that much on the CPU. If you didn’t answer yes to those questions, consider a R5 3600/B450 and grab some fast RAM and a solid board. If you’re comfortable with everything, go for the 9900K plus high-speed memory and a great motherboard. Enjoy!
