I rely on a computer headset mostly for one-on-one chats and meetings. I own a standard wired monaural on-the-ear model that costs around thirty dollars. It receives good customer feedback, but I frequently struggle to understand others, particularly when they have different accents.

I’m curious if my difficulties stem from the headset itself or from reduced sound quality during transmission.

Some wired monaural models are priced three times higher than mine, and I’m wondering if upgrading could improve the audio experience. If so, I’m unsure how to identify a truly better option. The reviews don’t clearly highlight differences between expensive models or between my current one and others.

I own a Turtle Beach Atlas One Gaming Headset that connects via cable. It’s an over-ear model and originally cost around $40 when I purchased it a few years back. The sound quality during my Zoom meetings is excellent, and the microphone is clear enough for others to understand me well.

This is a matter of taste, not criticism, but you're recommending a headset like the one my employer provided, which I replaced at my own expense because I found it unusable. Over-the-ear speakers are unacceptable to me. Apart from the fact that I find them uncomfortable, they block outside sound. When another member of my household calls to me from another room, I have
got
to be able to hear them. When I'm using an on-the-ear headset, I can. With an over-the-ear headset, I can't.
I'd prefer to keep to the scope of my original question: how can I tell whether a better headset could improve my sound quality, and if it could, how can I find one that actually does so?

If you're seeking a single ear headset, the Jabra Evolve 20 UC Mono is a good option. At work, I opt for a higher-end wireless model and it delivers excellent sound quality. For superior clarity, consider a stereo headset; an open-back design helps capture ambient room sounds. The Phillips SHP9500 offers comfort, reasonable pricing, and allows external audio input—just pair it with an external mic as shown here: https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audi...YN...5KWN&psc=1. Alternatively, the Blue Snowball USB model provides quality at a fair price and is more comfortable than any earbud I've tried. https://www.amazon.com/Philips-SHP9500S-...deae8f9840
