You can create a USB or DVD of Win10 using the media creation tool. I personally chose to purchase the serial key directly from Microsoft, which means you don’t have to remember it—just log in with your email address. You’ll also receive the serial key via email if you opt for an offline installation later.

I possess an OEM copy of 8.1 Pro that can be used on a fresh machine. Begin by installing Windows 8.1. After the installation completes, proceed with these steps. I performed this process five days ago—avoid spending extra money on unnecessary licenses. To launch the Product Activation Wizard, open the Start screen and swipe in from the right side, or move your mouse to the upper-right corner to show the charms menu. Select the Settings charm, then tap or click Change PC Settings. Next, tap or click Activate Windows. If your system isn’t activated, PC Settings will offer guidance tailored to your activation issue. If phone support can assist with resolving the problem, tap or click the relevant link, which may look like one of the following: Activate by phone Contact customer support for assistance. After activating Windows 8.x, you’re ready to upgrade to Windows 10. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/950929 Hardware changes If you made major hardware modifications—like swapping your hard drive or motherboard—you’ll need to activate Windows via phone. For details on how to do this, refer to the product activation guide.
