Hi, today I was testing my VM on my main PC while it got quite warm. I was transferring a lot of data and moving files between VMs. Eventually, the downloads slowed down noticeably. Installing Debian on my laptop took about 12 hours, which was fine since I hadn’t used it much. The issue with my desktop’s Ethernet card or throttling doesn’t seem to be the problem.

What are the details? It looks improbable but possible. I’ll run some Iperf tests before pointing fingers at the network card. How much traffic was being used on it?

Intel I211 shows minimal activity. It seems to have started downloading around 30 Mbps for roughly five seconds before stopping. The Debian installer indicated a completion time of approximately 12 hours.

Connections become faster during big downloads, but it can take some time for Windows to display the actual speed and completion time. Still, every chip has a tiny chance of overheating.

30mbs indicates minimal usage and suggests a low-power network device. To detect overheating, consider using iperf or checking network locks. Many factors can slow down a Debian download beyond just your NIC, such as ISP throttling, router problems, or Debian server limitations. Other users on the same network are also more likely to cause delays.
