He mentioned some files are becoming corrupt, like pictures and Excel documents. At first I thought it might be a virus, but when I ran malwarebytes the results showed mostly trojans and keyloggers—not much else. I also tried an error scan for bad segments, but nothing came up yet (only scanned 200GB so far). He’s using an Acre 5750G with Samsung 840 EVO and a 500GB HDD; the SSD is in the main bay, but the HDD was swapped with a DVD drive from eBay. Any advice would be greatly appreciated since he needs those files for school.

I'm reviewing the drive first, as that's what I'd do. I think it might have a bad sector. If it is, I'd transfer all the data right away—sometimes a local shop can recover data from a faulty HDD.

HDTune completed the error check without issues. Most office documents and images were intact, but a few files seemed damaged. I suspect a virus might be involved and plan to use Kaspersky to remove it.

It seems you're likely concerned about recovering your files. Have your sibling made any copies or backups?

Unfortunately, the situation isn't good. It might become a major issue.
