They charged a lot for old, bad modems from ten years ago. I bought a good one at Best Buy for $100 and used it for three years without any issues. However, my ISP was reluctant to turn it on when I first set it up.

they sent a team after me for the equipment i bought right away, but since they handle rentals, they thought i had stolen the modem from my previous location. I had to reach out to their support to ask them to stop the hit squad. It took months before they finally stopped contacting me and had to deal with paperwork and forms to resolve the issue.

We paid for our own service instead of using theirs, which helped us cut costs by around $120 each year.

I bought it myself when I settled into my new home a few years back. It has since returned the investment. The ISP charges around $5 each month for a modem. I’d prefer to spend $100 upfront for a quality unit and avoid ongoing costs.
