Hello, I recently assembled a VR PC in my living room. It comes with a Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 3060, 1TB NVMe drive, 16GB RAM, Gigabyte b550M DS3H AC, and an EVGA 650W Supernova G2. I opted for a refurbished motherboard due to positive reviews. Once everything arrived, I built the system but faced issues during Windows installation. After clearing CMOS and updating the BIOS, I managed to download and install Windows. I attempted to overclock the CPU to 4.2 GHz, but it failed to boot. When I adjusted the BIOS settings to 4 GHz, it worked. After a short VR session, my headset slipped off, and I needed water. My PC froze with a blue screen, then a black screen that wouldn’t restart. Restoring to stock speeds resolved the problem, but after a few restarts, the screen flickered erratically before crashing into a boot loop. It took me about 30 seconds of CMOS clearing before it briefly logged in. My concern is whether the CPU or motherboard is the issue—though I suspect the latter—but I’d appreciate your advice.
Ryzens and their compatible boards often have strict RAM requirements. Review your board manufacturer’s compatibility list for the specific processor you’re using—like the 3600 (Matisse)—to confirm stable memory support. If not listed, it might be a mismatch. My 5900X struggled initially because of the memory type I used; DIMMs worked but caused problems. Once I switched to RAM that matched my board’s QVL for that processor, the issues disappeared.
I removed the motherboard for a closer look and discovered damaged caps on one of the VRM leads, likely causing the instability and crashes you experienced. It seems I should have avoided buying used components.

Just keep in mind, unless you’re thinking about a future upgrade like an x800, x900 or 5xxx AM4 board, a B450 should work just fine for a 3600X. I currently have one running smoothly on an ASRock B450M-HDV. If you’re planning such a change, a B550 would be a better option. But based on what I’ve been told, if you need another one, make sure it matches your current RAM setup—Ryzens seems to have strict requirements. I already returned a replacement before realizing that one.
