Decided to push my i7 6700k further recently. Reached 4.8ghz at 1.43v. Intel says 1.52v is the maximum for Skylake voltage, correct? With an AIO water cooler, temperatures stayed below 75c. Played around ten minutes of Apex Legends. My system suddenly stopped. Restarted, set CPU to default, but got BSOD at login. Thought I’d messed up the overclocking, so I reinstalled everything. Still getting BSODs during reinstall. Reduced RAM to one stick, GPU, and storage, managed to install Windows. Drivers installation caused more issues. After much troubleshooting, the system now freezes or shows BSOD right after login, sometimes even seconds later, and it keeps failing to start the Windows installer from USB. CMOS reset, memory timings checked, RAM swapped, GPUs and CPU re-seated. Any suggestions? I suspect the extra stress from overclocking damaged my motherboard and it’s failing.
I recall reading that you should aim to keep the voltage at or below 1.4v VCore. A "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" 0x7E issue often stems from a damaged OS file, though IMC/Memory problems are less probable. The last time this error kept happening, I had to reinstall the operating system.
1.43V is slightly elevated. After trying all possible fixes—from resetting the BIOS to inspecting the RAM and restarting Windows—it's unclear what might be causing it. The problem could stem from the motherboard itself.
