Upgrading from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 and then removing the old license would allow you to reinstall Windows 10 on a fresh device, provided you keep the new activation key. Deactivating the previous key won’t prevent a successful reinstall unless you re-enter it correctly during setup.

There are many uncertainties about this process, but here’s what we understand. - After upgrading, your PC's motherboard gets the HardwareID feature enabled with Microsoft and linked to your Microsoft account. - The code provided is standard for all Windows 10 versions. - When you reinstall on the identical machine, you don’t require a CD key. You can bypass the CD-key steps and your software will activate automatically once online. How do you cancel your license and install on another device when the original CD key isn’t valid? We’re still figuring it out. My guess is you’ll need to contact Microsoft to move your activation before reformatting, and they might even provide a genuine CD key.
