I've tried free VPNs exclusively on my Chromebook. I used thunder VPN, turbo VPN, and a few others from the Google Play store. Thunder VPN consistently seemed to perform best among free options. I also used Proton VPN, which worked adequately. A common concern is whether these services can detect VPN usage when accessing sites with detection features. For example, using a VPN on Reddit might expose your IP address to others since it's a free service. Still, some may manage to identify the VPN if they choose to check.

When switching to paid VPNs, the experience differs significantly. Some platforms may still monitor usage if they wish to verify. Netflix is a popular site for VPN trials, and many believe a paid version functions properly there. However, I don’t use Netflix myself, so it’s unclear how strictly they enforce usage tracking.

For Reddit, I’m considering testing free and paid VPNs during its trial period. If you’re doing the same, what paid options should you prioritize for these trials? Most providers offer a week-long free trial, though some extend longer. When signing up, you’ll typically need to provide real credit card details to access premium features. If you cancel before renewal, you risk losing access. For short-term use (like a month), which VPNs are most reliable? I’d recommend starting with well-reviewed services like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or CyberGhost for their balance of speed and security.

The information available about VPN services is limited. Prices vary widely, and quality doesn’t always match cost. Some are free but unreliable, while others charge a fee but may not be trustworthy. I don’t suggest any unhosted free options. There could be better alternatives, but I’m unsure. It’s best to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each option you explore or stick with well-known providers like PIA.

I currently use Surfshark and it has been working well. However, it complies with Dutch laws, which are now included in the "Nine eyes surveillance alliance." I might switch to another service when my subscription ends, around 10 months from now since I renewed for a year.

The most effective method to evaluate VPNs is testing them in alphabetical order, which helps maintain a clear record of your trials. It's preferable if they are self-hosted outside your home country, making it simpler for them to disregard requests from authorities. Additionally, consider using a connection from another country for the same reason. Review their terms and the policies of the involved countries regarding VPNs. The main distinctions between free and paid options typically involve data limits for uploading/downloading, connection speed, and the number of sites you can access. Because more hops are required, performance will naturally decrease.

You're wondering about the best starting point and how many free trials you can take. It seems most platforms offer a 7-day free trial, so begin with that one and then cancel. Afterward, try the next option. Regarding free accounts, there are several you can use to test without cost. As for your experience with bans, it sounds like you encountered restrictions due to violating forum rules, possibly because you posted something prohibited. Creating a new account later may have triggered another ban.

Concerning VPNs, using one could help mask your IP address, but whether it matches others using the same service depends on how many people use it. For example, with Surfshark, your IP would remain tied to that provider unless you change it. However, many users share IPs within a single VPN service, so it might not completely prevent detection.

If you're worried about being blocked again, a paid VPN might offer more privacy, but it doesn't guarantee immunity from rule violations. Always review the forum's terms carefully before posting.

I understand the concerns about data usage and file downloads. Downloading large amounts of files can indeed raise issues. Regarding VPN usage, many forums suggest using one to bypass restrictions, such as account bans or location-based access rules. The experience you described with a website blocking users outside the US is common, and a paid VPN might help circumvent those restrictions. As for public Wi-Fi, while it’s generally safe to use with a VPN, there are risks if you’re connecting to unsecured networks—especially when accessing sensitive information like banking details. A reputable paid VPN adds an extra layer of protection against such threats.
