Your laptop is really outdated, but you enjoy gaming. You often need to play in 800x600 resolution, which is a 4:3 format. Some games like Warframe and Colin McRae Dirt 2 let you change the aspect ratio to 16:9 by setting it to 800x600 on Dirt 2 or 1024x768 on Warframe. You're wondering how to make a game display at 800x600 while showing a wider 16:9 view.

The outcome is shaped by the resolution, not by any other factors.

You can make your laptop show everything at that setting while playing games, it won't distort, but you'll see black borders.

Certain games can show squashed visuals and then enlarge them later. Many older console titles such as Halo 3 and MGS4 did this. It’s unclear if you can achieve this across the whole system on Windows.

If your GPU supports it, games can render graphics at a higher resolution and then reduce them to match your display settings for improved visuals, which also increases the video memory usage. When I first used my 980m, I’d play Tomb Raider at 4k with super sampling down to 1080p to test my frame rate. Others have noted that the aspect ratio is set by the output resolution. Simply scale your resolution to its smallest value and you’re done. 2560x1080 equals a 21:9 ratio, 1920x1080 is 16:9, and 800x600 is 4:3.
