I was installing a new computer and made an error while connecting the fans. The PC stopped working completely and won’t power back up now. Was I risking damaging the motherboard? Also, which component—RAM, CPU, or GPU—would be affected?

It's highly probable you damaged the board. That component is actually the security module.

Most current boards come with built-in safeguards. Stay calm, I once damaged the VRMs on an older AMD FX board and it fixed itself after a day. The best approach is to verify everything thoroughly—remove your GPU, leave just one RAM stick, and power it on.

Disconnect the board from power, then press the power button several times to reset the CMOS. After that, attempt to turn it on again.

Leave it off for about ten minutes to an hour. Sometimes it can take a while for the power to fully disappear from the board. Also, look around nearby parts for any signs of damage.

Congratulations! You managed it! Consider returning it if it was a DoA, though that's up to you. Use the small letters above/under the connector as a guide before plugging anything in, and when unsure, always read the manual. Most motherboards are forgiving, but some components can damage them. Overall, proceed carefully—it was just a $50 board.

I’m trying to do my best, just hoping it’s safe. I haven’t noticed any burning, so I’m hoping it’s not fully damaged.
