Have questions about the PD_12V_PWR connector?
Hello everyone, I’m near the final steps of assembling my new PC and need help identifying the correct cable for the power connection under the 24-pin ATX port labeled PD_12V_PWR (marked D) in the manual. I believe it’s a PCI-E 6+2 connector without the extra +2 pin. Regarding the PSU, I’m unsure whether to connect it into the PCI-E/CPU area or elsewhere—please clarify so I can avoid any damage to my new build. Specifications: MoBo: Asus ROG Crosshair X670E Hero GPU: Asus ROG Strix RTX 4090 OC CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D DRAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 6000Mhz CL30 PSU: Asus ROG Strix Aura 1000W
It's a PCI-E 6 pin connector (meaning 6 plus 2 pins). Connect the power side to the PCI-E/CPU part. This connector supplies additional power for PCI-E devices via the PCI-E slot. Expansion cards can draw up to 75W through this slot; using several high-power cards increases demand, potentially exceeding the ATX 24 pin connector's limits. The motherboard will distribute the load across multiple slots to protect the original connector. These connectors are secured: avoid applying too much pressure if they resist insertion.
I was in the live group chat yesterday with JJ from ROG while he reviewed the new upcoming motherboards from ASUS. I specifically asked about this connector. This information applies to all Z690 and Z790 ASUS boards completely. I said, "The manual is a bit confusing." JJ replied, "No, this connector supplies the front panel with power for 60 watt charging." So if you don’t connect it, your front panel will only support 27 watts. It won’t affect your GPU performance at all. I think the confusion might come from older models using this connector for extra power when running dual GPUs in SLI (this is just a guess). If you still want to use it, connect the 6-pin part of one of your power supplies’ PCIe/VGA cable and plug it into one of your VGA/PCIE outputs on the power supply. Hope this clears up any confusion.
