So I haven’t played any video games in over ten years, actually it’s longer than that. You probably understand what I mean if you’ve had a NES, PlayStation 1 and 2. Then I remember later years, you got the PS3, Xbox, and all those systems I never kept up with because I lost interest as I got older. Back then I hardly played any games even on the PC. I still recall downloading those ROMs from emulator sites a long time ago. Now the only games I remember liking were Madden. Now I see it’s available for PC too. My questions are a bit new since I haven’t played games in a while. I notice there’s PS5 now and the latest Xbox version. Back then you definitely had to buy physical copies—CDs or cartridges—when you bought those consoles. Later, with newer systems, I’m sure it’s still the same. But online these days, it seems you can play them for a monthly or yearly fee instead of buying the game outright? Is that correct? I don’t plan to buy a system like I used to; the only game I probably play is Madden. Now I see it’s available for PC. If I buy Madden for PC, is it just for playing against the computer? If I want to compete with others online, do I need a monthly subscription? Is there a free trial for Madden or other games so you can test them? Like I remember seeing a trial period—how long does it last? And if I play Madden against others worldwide, can I be on different platforms? Probably the same thing. Can’t imagine someone playing Madden on Xbox while another plays on PS5. Are there single-player PC games I could try for free?

Don't understand about trials, there are game passes (monthly or yearly) to play the games you want. Each brand has its own type—Ubisoft, EA, etc.—and some let you stream via Steam. It's similar to how streaming services work now. You could buy a full game unless it has lots of microtransactions. Consoles might offer their own passes (subscription), but they can be pricier than PC sales during holidays.

Many businesses provide access to video games through subscription models. This means you pay for an account and can play any game they offer, often with the option of streaming it directly from their servers, eliminating the need for powerful hardware. A few creators have made comparisons highlighting these services. Currently, only a handful of titles support such online subscriptions, making it rare compared to services like Xbox Live. The trend is shifting toward cross-platform play, though this isn't universal. Some popular games, like Madden, offer trial periods with extended access before purchase. Demos are becoming less common, and while World of Warcraft can be played for free up to certain levels, multiplayer features are limited. Occasionally, platforms like Steam host free weekend events where games are available for a limited time.
