I assembled several components for an affordable PC setup, mainly a Dell Optiplex 990 motherboard paired with an Intel i5-2400 processor and a GeForce 9800 GT graphics card. I was able to boot into Windows 7 and install drivers successfully. The onboard graphics functioned properly. My goal is to upgrade to dedicated graphics, specifically the GeForce 9800 GT. I connected it, ensured proper seating, and verified fan operation—no output detected. The graphics card supports both S-Video and DVI connections, but I only have a DVI to HDMI adapter. I tested this adapter on another motherboard, which worked after baking for eight minutes. It also functioned with a GTX 1050 on different boards. However, when using the Optiplex 990, the adapter provided no output whatsoever, matching the 9800's behavior. Both cards operate normally without DVI output while connected to the Optiplex board. I’ve tried all PCIe slots and suspect the issue lies in driver recognition—Windows labels the GTX 1050 as a generic VGA adapter, disabling its onboard video entirely. The 9800 shows no detection in any software or device manager, even though it works perfectly with HDMI. I’m unsure why this happens. Could there be a hidden setting preventing DVI output? Both cards receive power and function in other builds, yet fail to produce DVI when plugged into the Dell board. Installing drivers for the 9800 might enable DVI output, but that’s not my priority right now. I’m considering replacing it with a new unit on eBay.
