Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 – which performs better depends on your needs. For a gaming PC, both can work well, but Ryzen often offers better performance per dollar and strong multi-core support. Consider what you prioritize most in the build.

For gaming, the difference isn't significant. In heavy tasks, AMD offers workflow advantages.

Consider an i7 9700K or opt for a Ryzen 9900K. Typically choosing one allows you to pick a 3900X for comparable cost, offering roughly half as many cores but still delivering strong performance. Alternatively, go with Ryzen 3700, 3700X, or 3800X and save money if you were targeting a 9900K elsewhere.

The Ryzen 7 offers higher IPC and better efficiency, while the platform lasts longer. The 3700X provides a superior memory controller, making it ideal for versatility. It matches the 3700X in multi-threaded performance and excels in complex tasks. For single-threaded work, the 9700K is better, but the 3700X will be close and much stronger in multi-thread scenarios. If budget allows, go with the 3700X for broader use.
