As long as the site you're visiting begins with https:// (such as you're in a safe position. HTTPS secures all information exchanged between you and the server. VPN services might still monitor your internet activity. For a free option, I'd recommend TunnelBear. A random public VPN feels a bit untrustworthy to me.
