Hey there! I'm planning to assemble a new PC for a friend who lives about four hours away. She's on a tighter budget, so I'm focusing on getting value without breaking the bank. Used to buying high-end components, I'm looking for someone experienced with budget builds and knows how to pick affordable options. I need a solid ATX B550 MB to finish the setup but I'm unsure if it's the best choice. I've considered the ASRock B550 Pro4 ATM, but usually prefer ASUS or Gigabytes models which are a bit pricier but more reliable. The Pro4 also feels a bit lacking in features. Can anyone suggest a reliable MB within the $115 range? Or should I upgrade for better performance?

Other parts: CPU – Ryzen 5 5600X, RAM – 16GB at 3200 MHz (2x8), GPU – likely a used 1070, SSD – 1TB WD Blue (already owned), PSU – Seasonic 650W Gold, Case – P300A. The workload is mainly graphic tasks and light gaming. PCIe 4.0 support is important.

To lower costs, consider a suitable processor, a B450 motherboard, and a BIOS upgrade. The budget-friendly MSI MAX boards with good VRM cooling work well for power needs, and models like Gaming Plus and Tomahawk offer decent features. Micro ATX variants are also typically affordable, such as the mortar.

A high-core CPU will help avoid needing to replace the board later. It makes sense she’d want an R9 5900x. She noticed how my renders looked and it sparked some envy in the room—I updated my original post to match this idea.

For 16 core performance, consider skipping budget ASRock options. The VRM configuration works best with 8 cores or a standard 12 core, though you may need to push it a bit more for models like the MSI B550-A Pro.
