This EVGA SR-2 board features 32GB of DDR3 memory with 4GB modules. I discovered several functional DDR3 ECC 16GB sticks for around $75 per set. Should I consider it? Online discussions have mostly dismissed the idea, with some suggesting it's too early for 16GB sticks. I'm also replacing my dual E5620s with dual X5687s for $20, wondering if that upgrade makes sense.

It's definitely not officially supported, it only officially supports up to 4GB DIMMs of unbuffered DIMMs. That said, people have gotten buffered DIMMs to work on that board, so this is in the area of might work. Found a forum post that says that people have gotten 8GB RDIMMs to work on that board pretty reliably, but haven't been able to get 16GB DIMMs to work. That said, this is before registered 16GB DIMMs existed, and the only 16GB DIMMs were load reduced which put a substantially higher load on the memory controller. The board's BIOS needs to be able to take into account the LRDIMMs and downclock the memory, which it likely can't. That said, if you're buying a 16GB DIMM now, it might actually work. If it says the organization on it is 2Rx4 RDIMM, I'd say there's a good 80% chance that it would work. If they're 4Rx4 LRDIMMs though, I'd be very surprised if it does.

I should have added that in the post. The modules are Samsung M393B2G70BH0-CK0Q9, which are 2RX4 according to vendors.
