Hey, I'm getting into overclocking now and building my gaming PC. I currently have a G.Skill Trident Z with 8GB RAM split between two 4266MHz modules. My aim is to lower the clock speed to around 16-16-16-36 or even lower, while getting at least 4400MHz for RAM speeds. I'm thinking about getting a new M/B card—either "Maximus XII Hero" or "Maximus XII Apex"—to achieve this setup and run real tasks. I've been researching and talking to others, and it seems that Apex is more suited for serious RAM overclocking. It’s not hardcore stuff like LN2, but it does require good peripherals. The Maximus XII Hero has better features like a 5Gbps port, which could help, but the Hero model would be fine too. Let me know your thoughts!

I mean.... not to be that guy, but "why"? If its strictly for fun, thats totally valid. Overclocking is a fun hobby and definitely nothing wrong with that. But, "using in real tasks" is a but of a weird choice of words. I guess my point is don't really expect much of a real world difference, unless of course whatever your applications are are very very RAM intensive, but if that was the case I wouldn't run OCed RAM for them... as most of them are scientific applications and I wouldn't trust possible errors messing up my results. Also, make sure you have a good CPU as well. Mobo is important once you get up past 4000 MHz, but CPU is equally important. Also remember, at those speeds you usually start sacrificing CPU core clock potential for RAM speed which is a trade of most applications would not benefit from, but instead be hindered. Basically, make sure you have the best CPU you can get your hands on, 10900k is the go to option as it should be the highest possible silicon quality leading to the best chance of a good IMC, then a lot of time tuning and tweaking, and even more time testing for stability. I am sorry though, I am not the right person to help with mobo choice. I just don't know which board has the best topology etc. But if your good with all of that, happy overclocking! And may the silicon lottery be forever in your favor

No problem Smile. As a second language.... your better than many who learned it as their first language so don't even worry about it. (some of us are just lazy.... i should use you're but im lazy lol) Anyways though, for gaming, you will see almost no difference in performance. But as long as you know that, thats fine Smile. If you're doing it for fun, like I said thats totally valid, it is fun to do. But don't expect any performance gains... Basically, unless you already have a 10900k and a 2080ti, don't "waste" money on RAM overclocking goals if your intent is to get more FPS. But, if your happy with your performance and just want to have some fun learning how, totally a fine reason

because it's not a clear cut limit in overclocking for any motherboard, it's wrong to say "you need the Apex if you want 4400C14 since the Hero will only let you do 4400C16" or sth similar. Then I think the Hero is more suitable for you, numbers you've listed arent that extreme anyways

The APEX offers superior memory expansion options, but you'll miss out on more than 16GB of RAM if you intend to remain on the same system long-term.

I was surprised to see my 1866Mhz DDR3 CL9.9.9 run smoothly at 2133Mhz CL11.11.11 consistently across all apps for the past year. During earlier tests it couldn't reach 2400Mhz, but it maintained a stable 2200Mhz (recently it crashed during another test but had held steady at 2200Mhz CL11.12.11) so it settled at 2133Mhz CL11.11.11. The boost over the original model is noticeable in gaming benchmarks, though I’m not sure if it’s perceptible in everyday use since those minor issues are rare in a solid gaming setup.

The hero should manage memory usage carefully. You're likely to reach the memory controller's maximum before addressing the hardware. If this setup came from an overclocked CPU bought from a trusted overclocker, consider upgrading with APEX and liquid nitrogen.
