The laptop is running significantly slower than expected. Someone suggested replacing the hard drive. Here are your specifications: Dell Inc., Inspiron 7737, x64-based PC, SKU Inspiron 7737, Intel i7-4510U CPU at 2.00GHz, 2001 MHz, 2 cores, 4 logical processors.

It's likely a software problem, though swapping that HDD for an SSD is often a good move. Drives don't actually slow down physically with age. Years of software issues can cause the system to feel sluggish. A Crucial MX500 or Samsung 860 EVO will improve performance. However, transferring data from the old drive to the new might just be moving all that accumulated mess. Despite the discomfort, a fresh installation paired with the SSD would be better.

Thank you for your response. Your hard drive isn't even half full, yet the laptop remains slow, which might explain why it was reported as damaged. What are your thoughts?

An SSD along with a fresh installation can improve performance.
But, was the resolution caused by the SSD or the updated operating system?
😉
Or possibly both.

What are your thoughts? Would the system function properly if the old drive is removed?

I definitely wouldn't purchase a no name drive from fleabay.
The SSD prices on that listing are quite low. 240GB for £55? Not worth it.
Check AmazonUK instead.
Crucial MX500, 500GB for £59.76.
Yes, skipping the HDD means you'll have to reinstall the OS on the new SSD.

Laptop hard drives are optimized for low power requirements and better battery run times.
Not for performance.
Many are 5400rpm and not the 7200 rpm found in desktops.
If you replace your hdd with a ssd, it will absolutely transform the performance of your laptop.
I have done this with every laptop our family owns.
Here is the easy way.
Buy a samsung 860/870 EVO 2.5" ssd of sufficient capacity to hold the used contents of your C drive.
Plus some for expansion.
Like this 500gb unit:
https://www.newegg.com/samsung-500gb-870...klink=true
Buy a usb to sata adapter cable like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Cabl...t=&hvlocphy=9011564&hvtargid=pla-822333677936
Download the samsung ssd migration app and instructions here:
Tool & Software Download | Samsung Semiconductor Global
Download various software related to your product, including Samsung Magician, designed for use with Samsung's memory products, and find related information.
www.samsung.com
Run the app to copy your C drive to the new ssd.
The original HDD will remain unchanged.
Replace your HDD with the new ssd.
