I own a Western Digital My Book 4tb External Hard Drive. I saved many of my games on it, but it was nearly full. When I opened it today, the game icons didn’t appear. I checked the file explorer and saw the drive listed, then tried to access it in Disk Management, but it still showed the same fatal hardware error. I ran a chkdsk command in CMD and it reported the drive was OK. However, updating device drivers didn’t help. Could there be another way to recover my files onto another storage?

You might be able to remove the drive from its case to avoid the USB controller by linking it directly to an internal SATA power/data header in your computer. But most WD external drives won't work outside the enclosure unless you format them first. It’s likely worth reaching out to a data recovery expert if you really need to try to get the information from this drive.

Thanks for your response. I've already removed the USB controller from its case and will attempt a connection using SATA power. I hope to retrieve my files, otherwise I'll consider a professional data recovery service.
