I haven't tried Half Life yet, (surprise!) But I'm not sure which version to choose. Of course, I'd pick Half Life 1, but for Half Life 2 there are three options. Half life 2: episode one and two—should I get all three or just one?

Just jump straight to 3, the original and 2 are great games, but the last one is legendary.

HL2, 2:1 and 2:2 are separate titles, you must purchase all three. I haven’t finished HL1, it’s not necessary—just a few minor mentions like the "microwave casserole" situation.

2 and 2:1 are different, 2:3 and 2:4 were never released, 2.4 was completed (not valve) but 2.3 wasn't. Then 2.3 was delayed and nothing has been heard about it since.
