M.2 is merely a connector utilizing PCIe. Many H61 boards were released prior to the connector gaining widespread use, yet for Chinese salvage boards such as this one, they were introduced after the connector became common. Because it functions as a PCIe slot in an elegant design, it can be integrated into older boards with BIOS support for accessing those drives.
It relies on BIOS capabilities for booting PCIE devices. Modifications could enable them even on older X79 boards.
