H265 does not shrink the output file size
I have a raw OBS video at 17000 bitrate and transferred it to Davinci Resolve 17 and Magix/Sony Movie Studio 15. Both programs support H.264 encoding, but the output from OBS is in H.264 only. After editing in both software, the file sizes are nearly identical. H.265 does not lower the bitrate or compress the video significantly. Wikipedia mentions that 720p H.265 can halve the file size, but it doesn’t seem to be happening here. What’s going wrong? How should I fix this so H.265 actually works? Also, I have the K-Lite Codec Mega Pack installed on my computer—does that help?
To achieve half the size, you need to adjust the bitrate to half of the original value. This isn't done automatically; video editors either match the input's bitrate or follow fixed standards. Try setting the bitrate to 8500 and check the results.
