Hello everyone, I'm setting up a home lab/NAS server and have acquired an X470 board along with a Ryzen 7 at a budget-friendly price. The MSI site says it works with ECC memory. I'm curious if anyone has tips on using registered memory with this board—should I avoid old ECC dimm and rely only on the modules listed on the compatibility page, or should I opt for standard parts for my server? Yes, this board supports ECC, though it needs the pricier, less common unbuffered version. If you can afford it, go with that; otherwise, stick to regular, non-ECC, unbuffered DIMMs.
Registered modules aren't functioning properly. The memory controller is built into the CPU, and AM4 processors from Ryzen support only standard (unbuffered) DDR4 and regular ECC DDR4. Motherboards with AM4 sockets don't accept FB or LRDIMM DDR4 modules. The amount of ECC supported varies by motherboard and BIOS.
