Guide to VSYNC assistance and support.
Hi, I'm looking for the best time to enable VSYNC. I've noticed that using it during a single DOTA 2 session improved my performance, but I'm unsure if it's the right moment. Right now VSYNC is off, showing 70-90fps with a max of 100+. When I switch to it in the game menu, I see my FPS drop to 30 (half of what VSYNC would normally give) and the max is capped at 120. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster with 1366x768 resolution and 60Hz refresh. Could you help me understand the optimal timing? Thanks.
Turning on VSync aligns your frame rate with your monitor's refresh rate. This keeps the display stable at 60 frames per second when the monitor supports it, helping prevent screen tearing. Scenes and menus typically run at 30 frames per second, which is the standard setting.
It seems the absence of screen tearing gives the OP a better feel for performance. Dota's menu should run at 60fps unless adjustments were made.
I switched off VSync in BF1. The game feels smoother without it. I don’t understand why, though—I have a 60Hz 1080p screen. I’ve heard VSync isn’t always working perfectly, which might explain it. BF1 Cut Scenes run at 30fps, and the menu options were endless.
You're curious about how VSync affects GPU load. It can help reduce GPU usage, especially if you're already running at high frame rates like 120fps. With a 60Hz monitor, VSync typically lowers the GPU demand to around 70% or less.
It's about limiting your frame rate below what your hardware can handle. This lowers the demand on components like the graphics card.
I don't seem to grasp the full point. VSync restricts your graphics card to match your monitor's refresh rate. With a 60Hz screen, it caps the GPU at 60 frames per second. If your game struggles to hit that speed, it will drop to the nearest multiple—like 30fps if you're at 55fps. This prevents visual tearing and ensures smooth playback since the frame rate aligns with your display. In certain games, you might notice slower input response because the card adjusts each frame to fit the monitor. Experiment with different games to see your experience. Generally, if you maintain a steady above-60fps rate and VSync doesn't introduce obvious delays, it's advisable to enable it for a more fluid gameplay. If you consistently hit 60fps or less—or if it feels laggy—disable VSync.
