We moved in together last year and share a love for gaming and Computer Science. We watched Linus' video about setting up a PC together and decided we should try something similar next time we need to upgrade. With the new AMD CPUs coming out, we’re planning our own gaming rig. We’re considering the R9 5950x as the CPU and an ASRock X570 Taichi motherboard. The main concern is our two NVIDIA RTX 3070 graphics cards and several NVMe SSDs might overload the 20 PCIe lanes (I heard that). If anyone has tips or advice on this, it would be great since we don’t want to buy two CPUs, boards, and cases when a single setup could work better through virtualization.

Ensuring virtualisation runs smoothly and consistently is quite challenging. It’s likely more practical to stick with your existing setup and upgrade each component to B550/5800X. Based on your current hardware, you might retain RAM and CPU cooler from your Ryzen 5800X and opt for a budget B450 board instead of a B550 to cut costs (though you’ll miss PCIe4 graphics and M.2 support with B450). Many affordable B450 boards are compatible with Ryzen 5000 models—just verify the manufacturer’s CPU compatibility list.
