I'm just starting out with overclocking but accidentally hit the maximum for my GPU's MHz. The screen started stuttering and showed a message about the Nvidia driver crashing and recovering. Did this harm my card or was it trying to protect itself?

Didn't harm it, it's just a standard crash notification.
