I never claimed there was a massive gap, but an i3 offers a stronger CPU for gaming even with a small difference. It fits well with the price and manufacturing ease of building an i3 or H81 over an FX 8 core/990FX unless you prioritize poor VRM cooling. Even then, Intel might be more affordable. FX CPUs aren't really worth buying unless you need a very budget workstation or for editing/streaming—otherwise, a low-tier Intel chip can often outperform a high-end AMD one. I’d usually suggest an i5 if it stays within your budget.
I understand your point completely. I’m generally against the FX-series, but I don’t enjoy hearing users claim the i3 is superior without clear reasons. Your message should help clarify why the FX-8xxx isn’t a strong choice and why we prefer the Intel platform more. As you’d suggest, an i5 would be a better fit—similar to what you’d recommend for an i5-4440.
