GTA V fails to detect Windows Media Player.
The game fails to launch, repeatedly displaying the aforementioned error message. I verified installation by reinstalling and attempting other troubleshooting steps suggested in Steam forums. I am uncertain of a resolution; I’m confident the game functioned correctly prior to the recent update requiring the use of the Rockstar Launcher.
Some time ago GTA V stopped requiring WMP specifically, but rather Windows Media Foundation. This is why the error that pops up says Media Player "Feature Set".
I can only assume due to what you said that the "Feature Set" allows for something WMP may not, like the ability to stream game cutscenes, vs playing them inside WMP itself. A sort of video engine vs player.
Here's how to fix it.
Previously, GTA V required Windows Media Player, but now utilizes Windows Media Foundation. The error message referencing "Feature Set" arises from this change. It is likely that the “Feature Set” enables functionality unavailable in WMP, such as streaming game cutscenes instead of playing them within WMP itself – a video engine versus player distinction. Here’s how to resolve it.
