I played GTA Online in a solo lobby and found another player there. He seemed like a modder who kept sending random messages. When I shared my public IP, city, and state, he used it to target me. I left the lobby right away. It’s unsettling to think about what someone could do with your public IP, even if it was just for pranks. Can anyone reset my IP address so I get a new one?

When you change your router settings, you typically receive a fresh IP address. In some cases, simply turning off and then reattaching the router can also provide a new IP.

Your public IP can be traced back to your city and state unless you use a VPN. Remember, understanding a general location isn’t very useful. I don’t share my IP address publicly because it might reveal more than intended, but if you’re not concerned about details, there’s no need to worry.

They can attach geographic location details to the device. Your physical address isn’t linked to the IP; for instance, I reside in Romulus city, yet my IP shows as Van Buren Township—the town just west of us. They might identify which ISP manages the IP. They could also target you with DOS or DDOS attacks, depending on the provider. For example, my ISP Comcast ties the IP to your router’s MAC address or the ISP’s gateway. Switching the MAC address can yield a fresh IP. With the ISP’s gateway or a customer-managed one, altering the MAC is usually not possible. Using a regular modem and router, you often have flexibility to modify the router’s MAC and obtain a new IP address.
