Believe it or not, getting banned is possible if you access the modified GTAO site at any time, especially by inviting others or doing anything unauthorized. For GTAV, sticking to single-player mode seems to be the most secure option.

It appears the rules are clearly marked as an EULA breach, whether in single-player mode or with closed or public lobbies. However, I haven’t come across any information about single-player scripting or modding recently.
