I'm considering getting the 9800GX2 for my secondary system, which is based on an integrated Radeon HD 4250. I can pick it up for free if I’m willing to collect it myself. I plan to run two titles—The Crew and GTA V. The Crew should work on DX10 GPUs, but there’s been a lot of debate about whether GTA V supports DX9/DX10 or is limited to DX11. Do you have a clearer answer than the usual online searches?

It makes little sense to push through a tough game when a better, cheaper option is available.

Why not grab an R7 240 for around $40 to $50? It should work fine, they invest heavily in the game and it’s likely there are DirectX 9 features included.

It's a well-known setup. The trip isn't too long either. A $40 purchase at my nearby shop will give you an HD 5450, which seems even inferior to some GPUs found in the 9800GX2. The machine it'll be installed in has only a 1440x900 display, and my younger sibling will handle the gaming with low settings—perfect for him. I own a high-end rig for 1080p ultra-settings.

Edit: Though I think an HD 5450 could work in Hybrid Crossfire with the built-in graphics on the board.

Find a GTX 480 on eBay and smile at how you imagined a 9800GX2. It’s not just DX11—it’s affordable now and will easily handle the G92 furnace five times better.

The GTX 480 works well as a heater but lacks aftermarket options for the GX2 model.

Absolutely, there are definitely more affordable choices available. I can browse Craigslist and find plenty of other great options. My dad actually bought two 6970s for just $100.
