After moving to Windows 10, I tried Groove Music and noticed it accepts different formats for album art. For MP3s, both embedded and folder.jpg work, but with FLAC files I've experimented with .png, .jpg, and mixed folders. Let me know if you need more details!

I recall from the past, when Windows Media Player would automatically adjust all folder.jpg files to a size of 200x200. I wouldn’t rely on Microsoft for album artwork anymore.

It continues to occur with WMP, but Groove doesn’t. I opened WMP to see if the issue is just Groove not recognizing the art, and it resized my album cover. Now I’m forced to redraw it . I don’t understand why this happens. Every time I install Windows, I need to disable WMP’s automatic info retrieval before loading music, just in case it interferes with my collection. It feels like they built the player to be frustrating! Well, I’m back to using foobar!

Haha, yeah, WMP has always been the top pick for getting back to Foobar. Personally, I prefer MusicBee—it looks great, works well with my Subsonic setup, and offers all the features you need. It pairs nicely with my music files arranged specifically for it. I tried Groove briefly, but it felt basic and limited. I don’t think anyone would really want to use those options anyway.

Funny thing—never mentioned MusicBee before, I’ll give it a try. Subsonic sounds cool (I’ve always wanted to build my own music server), but how does it stack up against Plex?

I'm not sure if it's better than Plex, I heard Plex got an overhaul with music but I haven't tried it yet. Plex used to be crappy for Music so there used to be no comparison. Subsonic is pretty great if you have a large library. If you want to check out Subsonic be aware that some of the features need the "premium" service, which is a small subscription fee. I paid a small fee back in the day, like £10 and have the premium features as a lifetime subscription. However, there is a fork of Subsonic called Madsonic, which I believe is completely free. But yeah, it's great for getting my music on the move, I use the Android app called Dsub and can connect to my server from anywhere using a yourname.subsonic.org url. Best thing about Subsonic in my opinion is that it can rely on your folder structure for navigation, and is not tied completely to ID tags for organisation. It handles large libraries exceptionally well, and picks up album art as cover.jpg, or folder.jpg etc. Furthermore, I can create playlists in Musicbee, export them quickly to Subsonic, and sync up with Dsub. It's about as close as you can get to a do it yourself Spotify. Plus it works with all file types, including flac, and can even transcode on the fly down to mp3 if you don't want to listen to Flac on mobile devices. This is how my MusicBee setup looks:
