GPU usage spikes during gameplay then leading to performance drops
I tested the HD7850 in CrossFire with 2GB RAM, and once I reached a high VRAM threshold during Battlefield 4, performance dropped. After several maps, I had to restart the game to free up memory. Is there any way to prevent this from happening? Could there be a command or setting that clears the memory when switching to a new map?
What level of detail are you applying? Resolution scaling allows me to go up to 4K, which means I can handle around 4GB of VRAM, though I'm still not at the maximum. Reducing the alpha channel settings will also make a difference.
Are you running Mantle? Back when I could play BF4 (before the patch update) I experienced major slowdowns without DirectX. In Crossfire I’m getting around 90 FPS with ultra enabled using DirectX, but switching to Mantle causes a noticeable drop in frames and eventually makes the game hard to play after a while. Right now I can’t even run BF4 properly.
These helpful notes highlight a small issue that’s consuming my VRAM. 2GB should be sufficient for the game at full resolution without scaling. The main concern is that after loading maps in sequence, it fails to clear the previous game’s data from the VRAM. I’m using Mantle, not experiencing the problem with DirectX 11, but I notice lower frame rates overall.
I understand but I have a 4GB card, so it's possible. I was just trying to mention that you can easily surpass the 2GB limit with BF4 at higher resolutions. ;-) My remark wouldn’t have been clear if VRAM were limited.
They've already tested all these options before. It doesn't depend on the game settings I choose; lower settings only mean more games are needed, but it still occurs eventually. Also, this might be connected, but turning down the Mantel turning down settings doesn't boost frames—it just lowers the GPU usage.
