Hey everyone,
I’m thinking about upgrading my GPU and considering the RTX 5080. My current model is the 3080 TI. I noticed the Zotac RTX 5080 Solid costs about €500 less than the Asus Astral 5080 in my area, which made me wonder. That’s a big difference — not something to ignore.

A few of my friends have been pretty tough with Zotac, saying things like “don’t buy it if it’s free” or “just low quality.” But when I looked up reviews online, there weren’t many strong negative opinions either. Nothing really stood out as a clear warning.

Now I’m still trying to figure it out. Is there a real reason why Zotac’s version is so much cheaper? Could it be about cooling, build quality, or components being lower than Asus? Or is it more about marketing?

Thanks in advance!

What is the model, make, and age of your PSU? (In my area)
Where exactly is it located?
Sometimes companies set prices lower than rivals to enter markets or for weaker products. Regarding Asus, I consulted their regional representatives, but they couldn't explain why their items cost more than others. In fact, they seem overpriced.
Zotac previously focused only on motherboards before shifting away from that line due to poor performance. Their AMP GPU line for the RTX 2000 series faced problems where memory didn’t properly connect to the cooler, let alone a thermal pad.
That said, each brand has its strengths and weaknesses. Speaking of brands, which other manufacturers besides Asus and Zotac are available in your region? What cards fit your budget locally?

Zotac has improved somewhat, and all board partners (AIBs) should adhere to the NVIDIA reference design specifications or offer higher quality. The failure rate from each partner is quite similar, so the brand you choose now doesn’t really matter much. Some models may have inferior cooling or less-than-perfect build quality, but overall it’s acceptable.

PNY is another brand that has been decent for at least a couple of decades, comparable to Zotac.

What concerns me more is the new 12vhpwr/12v 2x6 power connector, but I’m not too concerned yet. Personally, I think it’s better to wait for the next generation from AMD and NVIDIA rather than upgrade this model now. This generation feels really poor for consumers. A $1000 GPU with 16GB VRAM that sells for 50-100% more is just terrible value. I’d have considered the 5080 only if it had 20-24GB VRAM and matched the 4090 in performance.

I recently purchased a "cheap" (ha!) 5080 from Palit, their Gaming Pro model. I had hoped to wait for better choices but there was an increasing number of games my old 3070 couldn't handle well. The card seems to perform well and stays cool around the mid-60s during gaming. Strangely, HWiNFO 64 doesn't show a hotspot temperature for the card.
