I own a Radeon R9 280x and I'm adjusting it with Amd Crimson. Occasionally after restarting my system and using GPU-Z along with the Heaven Benchmark, both systems detect my overclock and provide a speed increase. But after repeated tests and longer use, the GPU no longer sustains the overclock, and even at the standard settings of 1000 MHz for the GPU clock and 1500 MHz for memory clock, the clock stabilizes around 850 MHz. In GPU-Z, when I hover over the GPU Clock value, it displays the current performance clock speed, though it mentions that idle low-power clocks might differ. I believe the device remains in a low-power state even while demanding tasks run.

I've boosted my power control to +20%, installed several clean versions of the Amd driver, and verified that my Windows 10 power settings are set to performance mode.

tinynja98 :
Did you verify if it is thermal throttling?
I'm unaware of a specific way to check for that, but when running with my preferred overclocking settings it stays around 72 degrees C which seems reasonable, and when it ignores my overclock settings, it stays at around 62 degrees C.

I discovered what was behind the throttling issue. Whenever Google Chrome is active, it limits performance, but once I close it—even though Chrome remains in the background—I regain full speed. I’m not sure why this occurs, but it happens. Maybe someone with more expertise could clarify for me since I’m still learning.

Does Chrome make use of the GPU to some degree? How does CPU activity influence the GPU?
