Gpu backplate needed?

I'm trying out my first liquid cools build and wondering if the backplate is necessary or just for looks. I might need it for functionality or can use the $$ elsewhere on the build, or save it for later if I decide.

The EK backplate is mainly designed for appearance. There could be a minimal amount of passive cooling between the thermal pads and the plate, though it's not very significant.

the backplate in certain models aids in managing heat, enhancing the card's durability, and improving appearance—often aesthetics plays a bigger role. If the liquid cooling block isn't required or included, you might not need it.
