Apple could abandon unified memory due to numerous leaks suggesting the M5 might feature separate CPU and GPU designs. However, it seems unlikely they will completely move away from unified memory, as the company prioritizes energy efficiency in its hardware. The shift toward ARM system-on-chips in the M-Series Macs reflects this goal. Apple is likely transitioning to chiplets mainly to boost production yields, with a move to 2nm expected around late next year for the M6. TSMC’s progress in achieving reliable 2nm manufacturing may be a factor in this timeline. What are your thoughts? Please let me know if you missed anything.

You're right! I'm just sharing what I've noticed online, not something official. My ideas aren't verified, but they seem to match some of the posts you saw.

Unified memory refers to Apple's approach, while AMD APUs and Intel chips operate similarly. Strix Halo supports up to 128GB of RAM, with 98GB potentially allocated to the iGPU. This flexibility applies even if the memory isn't built directly onto the chip. Nodes are becoming more costly, so splitting the chip can help boost efficiency, though MCM designs tend to be less power-efficient than monolithic solutions. Strix Halo consumes more power when idle compared to Strix Point and struggles with very low power modes. I question whether future base M5 processors will shift to MCM while offering separate CPU/GPU paths for different performance tiers.
