Got only 1Gbps when I expected to get 2Gbps on Windows 11.
Got only 1Gbps when I expected to get 2Gbps on Windows 11.
I recently switched my home internet to 2 Gigabit fiber. I bought a TRENDnet USB-C to RJ-45 Ethernet adapter so I can use the full speed. It works perfectly with my MacBook or Linux computers, getting all the speeds I want. But when I plug it into my Windows 11 PC, speedtest.net shows me only about half that speed. I tried changing drivers, turning off firewalls and antivirus, switching adapter settings, and nothing helped much. I even ordered a different brand of adapter from Anker to see if that fixed anything, but my friend with two adapters is getting full speed on his Windows machines while he has issues with the first one. Does anyone have any other tips? Thanks!
Which router do I have? How much does Windows tell me about my 2.5Gbps adapter's speed?
I am running the Google Fiber Multi-Gig Router (GFRG300). I need to check the link speed again, but I'm pretty sure it was listed as 2.5 Gbps. I'll take a screenshot when I get back at that computer later. I should have the new adapter by then and it will be good to verify if it has the same issue.
To get more than 1 gigabit internet speed, you need to connect your router using the silver port on the back. Check this link for details: https://support.google.com/fiber/answer/...our-router
Ok, I give up now. My new adapter won't even stick when connected to the silver 2.5 Gbps port on my Windows 11 PC, but it works great on the yellow 1 Gbps port. By the way, this new NIC actually gives me 2Gbps download speeds when used with a Chromebook, so I know the adapter is fine, just that my Windows 11 PC has some weird trouble. I'm going to return both USB-C to 2.5 Gbps Ethernet adapters. Maybe I'll try buying a PCIe 2.5 Gb NIC just to see if it works, but I don't think I have much hope left. Thanks for all the good suggestions and questions you've asked!
