Got a new fiber install problem where I'm only getting less than 1 gigabit per second instead of what I expected.
Hello, I just got a fiber install and my ISP put it as 100Mbps when they started. The guys who did the work checked everything and said we were fine. I called them back later to ask for the upgrade to 1Gbps. It took me about two days, but speedtest.net, fast.com, and Google Speed still only show ~100Mbps. My tech support team contacted my ISP's customer care and confirmed that their update order was finished. They said it might be a bad cable on my end. They're sending someone out next week to check, but I'm trying to make sure there isn't something wrong with me first. WHAT I'VE TRIED: I checked the "ethernet status" in Windows directly from my PC and see 1Gbps coming into my router. I tried unplugging my router and connecting straight to the ONT outside, and it still shows 1Gbps but speedtest.net drops back down to 100Mbps after a quick burst at the start of the test. I've tested multiple laptops, several different good Cat 6 cables from the ONT, and every single one of them displays a solid 1Gbps connection in Windows' "ethernet status" while speedtest is stuck at ~100Mbps for most of the time. I think this has to be their end... right?? Is there anything else I can try right now?
If you had a bad cable plugged in at 100mbps or a port that was broken at 100mbps, you could never go faster than that. Usually, on things like speedtest, you'd only see about 94 to 95mbps. If it jumps up to 250mbps, then your equipment is probably messed up. I guess you can try copying files between two computers at home. You won't get gigabit speeds because file transfers take a lot of time and use so much overhead, but they should be way more than 100mbps. Watch out though: some programs show file copy speed in bytes per second instead of bits, which makes it look slower. Maybe your router has this built-in feature? If so, you won't have to blame your PC anymore.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's on the noc side of my internet service provider. Before their company even showed up at my house, I checked every wired device in my network and made sure they were all running fast enough to handle 1Gbps speeds. Also, if you connect directly to theONT, your home router or switches don't matter right now anyway.
It would be strange if you had to send people to your home. Usually, the rules are set at the big office where everything is kept. If they tried to put limits in your equipment, you'd think someone would take it apart and hack it to skip them. I do know most fiber systems...and a lot of cable lines work that way. The data gets sent at its fastest speed because all the houses share one long strand of fiber. Also, companies can buy different rates depending on how many people are in each house. This means there is some device putting an artificial stop to the data before it hits the fiber.
I've checked things a little since I posted about this ONT, and the light status shows everything is fine for now. So yeah, I'm keeping it quiet for the moment. I'm still getting 100Mbps speeds on my new setup, which is faster than my old fixed wireless. Someone will probably call the network office and say they've done it from their end here. We already know that pretty much. Thanks!
