You're exploring some practical ways to optimize your current mesh setup. Here are a few suggestions:

1. **Wi-Fi Software Options** – You’re already using G Wi-Fi, which fits your needs well. Consider checking out open-source alternatives like OpenWRT or DD-WRT for more customization without breaking the bank.

2. **Hardware Comparison** – The Asus OnHub appears capable and competitive. Compare it with mid-range models from brands like TP-Link or Netgear to see if there’s a more affordable option that still meets your performance needs.

3. **Upgrading for Wi-Fi 6** – If you’re open to it, Wi-Fi 6E could be worth the investment later, especially if you anticipate higher data demands. It won’t be necessary right now unless you foresee significant usage growth.

4. **General Tips** – Keep your network documentation handy and consider joining online communities for troubleshooting or feature comparisons. This will help you make informed decisions without major changes.

What exact problem are you experiencing with the mesh system? If the system works for your needs, then there's nothing to be concerned about. Google discontinues products now and then. For WiFi, they seem to be focused on Google WiFi and Nest, both of which are decent when it comes to ease of setup and use. As these are more recent products, it's expected that the hardware/software has been optimized since the OnHub. But again, if what you have works for you, there's no need to upgrade at this time. Check the DD-WRT and OpenWRT website for hardware support. I don't see anything obvious at this time. If the device wasn't popular (not surprising, since Google no longer makes them), third party firmware support is almost going to be non-existent. Will the OnHub fail to work after December 2022? I can understand if there are no more firmware updates from Google/Asus, but it should still be able to function. Were you looking to get more features with third party firmware?
