I’m looking for ways to speed up editing in GIMP overall. With a ~5500x2800 image, large changes feel slow. You mentioned Windows 7 and GIMP 2.6. What would help most? A faster CPU or SSD, more RAM, or perhaps a GPU?

A quicker processor and a solid-state drive would make a difference. Extra memory and a stronger graphics card are helpful too, though they're not the most crucial factors.

Images at this resolution require RAM, but performance varies based on the effects used. With just 2GB of RAM, an upgrade would be advisable.
